If you are in the greater Puget Sound area and want to become a HAM operator. Take your Amateur Radio licensing class and exam through Microhams. The class is excellent.
You can also self study using Ham University and a book by Gordon West. The test questions are changing on June 2007 so wait to buy until after the new version comes out.
